The Japanese Society for Food Science and Technology (JSFST) is pleased to announce the development of the Academic Papers AI Research Assistant (APARA), a new online service tool designed to support the research and development activities of our members.

Operations for APARA are scheduled to begin this April. This announcement provides an overview of the background and features of the system, along with information regarding the recruitment of registered users (those seeking access to the "APARA Portal," which serves as the primary gateway to the service).

Overview of APARA
APARA is a research tool built on the "APARA Portal Site" platform. It operates by leveraging NotebookLM, which has been integrated with the Society’s extensive publication archives. Through this tool, we provide our members with a "Research and Development Support Cycle" that fully utilizes the stored abstracts and full-text articles of the Society.

Purpose and Goals
Purpose: To contribute to the productivity of members' research and development activities.
Goal: To become an essential daily tool for members' R&D activities.

Publication Archives Included (at Launch)
The Society's archives span 72 years and consist of approximately 10,000 papers. APARA is constructed using abstracts from all volumes and full-text versions of 2,700 papers (covering the past 15 years: 1,156 from the Japanese journal and 1,544 from the English journal).
Due to licensing agreements with Google and the functional constraints of NotebookLM, the archives are organized as follows:

Abstracts (All volumes): Consolidated into one "Notebook" (the unit used in NotebookLM to group information).
Full-text (Past 15 years): Categorized by journal (Japanese/English) and further divided into blocks of several years. Specifically, the Japanese journal is divided into 5 notebooks, and the English journal into 7 notebooks.
Note: The journals included are the Nippon Shokuhin Kagaku Kogaku Kaishi (Japanese) and Food Science and Technology Research (FSTR) (English).

Main Features of APARA
Within each notebook on the APARA platform, members can engage in AI Chat using all the stored papers as a knowledge source. Through this chat, members can utilize the features listed in items (1) to (5) below.

Notably, users can perform AI chats and receive responses in English within any notebook (even those containing full-text Japanese articles). By adjusting the output language settings in each notebook, AI chats can also be conducted in various other languages.

How to Use APARA
For detailed instructions on how to use APARA, please complete your user registration and log in to the APARA Portal Site. Once inside, you will find comprehensive guides, including the "Basic Instructions for the APARA Portal Site."
